A clean, clear and precise simplicity governed Kipp Stewart’s design philosophy- so aptly named by John Caldwell as “Quietly Down to Earth”
Furniture Design
Fresh out of school, Kipp Stewart was designing furniture akin to the simple, clean lines of American Shaker and contemporary Danish designs. For a year, Kipp worked in the world renowned Eames design firm and his furniture designs were exhibited in many of the fashionable magazines of the time. Later, in the 1970’s, with summit furniture, Kipp won national and international design awards. He has been exhibited in MoMA in New York City, Pasadena Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum, among others. His furniture has also been ensconced in the White House.
Painting
Kipp’s paintings emerged in the 1970’s and continued into the late 2000’s. He worked in colored pencil and acrylics, focusing his subject on still life and furniture to study line, form, color and shadow. Later, Kipp drew upon the Carmel and Big Sur coastline to portray a myriad of quiet seaside vignettes, lastly, there are the abstract paintings that Kipp reveals a dynamic interplay of shifting forms and bold colors in balance. There have been rare public exhibitions of his work at Hartnell College in 2018 and the Monterey Museum of Art.
Architecture
Kipp’s few residences in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley and Big Sur reveal a simple and bold use of natural materials, color and formal expression uniquely grounded to their sites. Perhaps his greatest legacy is the Ventana Inn on the Big Sur coast. Overlooking the sea, Ventana is an example of a robust timber frame construction quietly yet boldly expressed.
